From the Vault #4

Click the image to go to Soundcloud to hear piano only "Authentic Version" of MONEY OVER ME

Check out my Instagram story to hear clips from the piano/vocal demo.

This week's From The Vault was a bit of a hair puller for me. I attempted to upload the piano/vocal demo of Money Over Me this week, but alas the audio had some strange malfunctions in it. So I uploaded the piano only version to my SoundCloud and added snippets of the piano/vocal version to my Instagram Story. I just started experimenting with my Instagram story, I'm not sure about them yet... Instagram is already a tick sucking dry my time, but hey, it's a thing now and what the hell, go with it, right? (Man, I no longer know how to write a coherent sentence. Anyway...)

"Money Over Me"

This idea for this song came to me when I was in Baltimore, MD in 2011. Baltimore suffers from more than its share of urban issues... Riding the MARC train into Baltimore, I would see street after street of abandoned, collapsed buildings, reminiscent of Dresden after WWII. I would also spot a large amount of faux high-end and luxury brand products around town. I heard that knock-offs of a certain brand's handbags were being contracted in the same factory using scraps after hours. Plus there were a lot of hipsters around talking about how this or that is "authentic." So I got to thinking "What is authentic?" Plus I thought about how "free" has two meanings. So then what does it mean to be "free?" Basically, this song is my middle finger up to consumerist culture we live in.

(I've changed the voice of this song. Originally it was at "the powers that be," but I felt it was better if the listener is included in the the exclusion.)

LYRICS:

Money Over Me

They wanna sell me love

So I say show me what you got

I need some distractions

This world 'come a net and I'm caught

I don't have many friends

That I haven't traded or bought

Like Gucci from a car trunk

In an overpass parking lot

I'm told it's mind over matter

But they hold their money over me

I know it's mind over matter

Nothing worth having comes cheap

I'm sold it's mine over matter

Won't cha throw that money unto me

I'm gold it's mind over matter

But money over you and me

Money over me

and they say...

Put it up and watch 'em bid

Someone would buy our shit

if we made it look "authentic"

As if anyone can tell the difference

What is real and what is not

The lie's 'bout all anyone's got

And we're holding on to it

While we sit back and watch our world rot

I'm told it's mind over matter

But they hold their money over me

I know it's mind over matter

Nothing worth having comes cheap

I'm sold it's mine over matter

Won't cha throw that money unto me

I'm gold it's mind over matter

But money over you and me

But money over you and me

Money over me

Nothing is free

It's just paper, baby,

Do they see me

Or just dollar signs in my eyes?

No one is free

Choose Money Over Me

Do they see me

Or just the stepping stones they prize

It's not their fault,

They're hypnotized

Gratis, libre...

Gratis, libre...

Gratis, libre...

Nothing and no one is free

I'm told it's mind over matter

But they hold their money over me

I know it's mind over matter

Nothing worth having comes cheap

I'm sold it's mine over matter

Won't cha throw that money unto me

I'm gold it's mind over matter

But Money Over Me

I'm told it's mind over matter

But they hold their money over me

I know it's mind over matter

Nothing worth having comes cheap

I'm sold it's mine over matter

Won't cha throw that money unto me

I'm gold it's mind over matter

But money over you and me

But money over you and me

Money over me

Over Me

Over Me

Money over me
