In honor of the Women's March on Washington and upcoming Swan Day 2017. I put together a protest song to show feminine strength. I first typed up a rough version of the lyrics last month when I first read about the upcoming Swan Day. I overhauled it and started creating backing tracks yesterday. Today I decided if I wanted to record a vocal demo, I'd better just stick to a piano/voice arrangement for now. I feel happy with it. It's nice to meet a goal and get something done. (And I'm even okay with its imperfections.)
From the Women Arts:
SWAN Day/Support Women Artists Now Day is an international holiday designed to showcase the power and diversity of women’s creativity. Be a part of SWAN Day by creating or participating in a local event or online activity that celebrates women artists!
The official date for the Tenth International SWAN Day is Saturday, March 25, 2017, but please feel free to celebrate it any time during March or April that is convenient for you. The spirit of SWANevents is far more important than the exact dates.
This year a protest song writing contest is part of the event, and I hope to have a full demo ready to submit before I leave.
This song is meant to capture that as women we are creators of life (nature), but also creators of culture. (Thank you Barbara Kruger for your work, Untitled, We Won't Play Nature to Your Culture.) We stand up for our opinions; we stand up for our rights to have our own opinions; we stand up for the rights of others to have opinions that may differ from our own; we stand for unity, for compassion, for peace.
Full lyrics:
We are resilient
We are strong
Our hearts and voices
stretch far beyond
defying impossible
becomes our song
We carry the load
And we carry on
because
no one can silence
our heavy voices
our heavy voices
we lift up what weighs us down
we are defiant
with heavy voices
and our only choice is
to speak up and amplify the sound
We are mothers
We are sisters
We can shout out loud
within hushed whispers
we will be heard
across the earth
wherever we march
we tread on sacred dirt
because
no one can silence
our heavy voices
our heavy voices
we lift up what weighs us down
we are defiant
with heavy voices
and our only choice is
to speak up and amplify the sound
we create
we make
futures with our words and our bodies
we see
what we need
to suture the wounds and make it better
no one can silence
our heavy voices
our heavy voices
we lift up what weighs us down
we are defiant
with heavy voices
and our only choice is
and to speak up and amplify the sound
nothing will silence
our heavy voices
our heavy voices
we lift up what weighs us down
we stand united
with heavy voices
and our only choice is
to speak up and amplify the sound
We are resilient
We are strong
Our minds and bodies
stretch far beyond…
