Heavy Voices - Swan Day Song Contest
"Heavy Voices" is my submission to the Women Arts Swan Song contest. The song lyrics came to me as soon as a I saw the email announcement for the contest back in December. The music came a little later. The chaos of re-locating from Texas to Chicagoland put this on the back burner for a bit. With the Women's March last month, I received the fuel to complete. You can see a clip of a piano/vocal demo I did as my contribution to the march here.
This song reflects my "Arts as Activism" philosophy. I believe it is better for one to create some positive to show what one believes is right than give in to anger. I know I don't always do this, but it's all part of the process.
This song originally had a bridge, but just today, I decided it worked better without it. I made a couple of small other lyric and melodic changes just today. Overall, I feel a sense of accomplishment that I got something in for the contest. This is still just at the demo stage, but I think the ideas of the song come through strongly.
The video is basic, but I thought the public domain from here walking footage adds to the feel of the song. I harmonically and rhythmically structured it as a march. Aurally we are taking one step at a time towards our goals of human equality, support for the arts, and unity.
Cross your fingers for me!
